Degree in Industrial Design and Product Development

Presentation

The UAX Industrial Design and Product Development degree is structured over four years, in which students are trained in spatial vision, the mastery of form and the structuring of creative thinking which will enable future Industrial Design and Product Development engineers to synthesise the multiple variables that determine a design.

At UAX

During the first year, the students revisit the concepts of drawing, mathematics, physics and other basic subjects to prepare them for university teaching.

In the second and third year, they obtain solid training in subjects specific to Industrial Engineering, such as Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, and Machine Theory, and others relating to Industrial Design and new technologies such as Design Workshop, Graphic Design and Communications, Ergonomics in Design, with design in 2D and 3D, together with systems for analysing Finite Elements and Computer-Aided Engineering, giving technical support to the activities of engineers in the field of Industrial Design and Product Development.

Finally, at UAX these studies include specialisation in various fields of industrial design: Habitat Design, Automation and Transport Design, and Product Design and Development.

Facilities

Students have the use of modern laboratories and workshops such as the Materials lab, where they can examine the corrosion and degradation of materials; the Machines and Mechanisation lab, where they can carry out practical work relating to the manufacture of parts, metrology, and the resistance of materials; and the Electrical Technology and Machinery lab, where students design and test circuits.

The university also provides computer rooms for students with the software needed for Industrial Design projects, such as Autocad, Catia, Ansis, Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, and others.

Lecturers

The teaching staff consists of doctors, physicists, chemists, mathematicians, industrial engineers, arts graduates and engineers working in fields relating to industrial design with postgraduate qualifications. As well as solid teaching experience, lecturers have important professional careers, helping students to make contact with their professional milieu.  Lecturers work for companies including Peugeot, John Deere, Metro de Madrid, Nuzzi Industrial, etc.

Unique Features

Creativity is the common thread in this degree, enabling students to design new products and redesign existing ones: vehicles, furniture, toys, domestic appliances, lighting, household tools, technological products, etc., dealing with design problems from the first years of the course.

The lecturers propose design exercises which enable our students to present their products to national and international industrial design competitions. Some of these projects have been shown at trade fairs such as Casa Pasarela, or have been finalists in competitions such as the 2nd Design 10 Talent Contest. Also, in 2010 the MOTOUAX team from Alfonso X el Sabio University took part in the first MotoStudent competition against 21 other universities, ending up in fourth place.

Employment Opportunities

Future Industrial Design and Product Development graduates will be able to work in companies across all industries (furniture, lighting, ceramics, automobiles, packaging, transformed plastics and metal goods, etc.) in the technical, design, research or project departments, and also managing the technical and commercial communication the products require.

They can also create service, consulting or production companies and work as administrative or technical staff in the technical departments of government bodies concerned with industry and trade.
