Degree in Translation and Interpreting (4 yrs)

The degree in Translation and Interpreting is open to those who have a practical knowledge of at least one foreign language and who wish to come into contact with different cultures.

In the Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio university, the comprehensive syllabus and the technical, material and human means enable students to acquire those linguistic skills, which are necessary to carry out their future profession. The teachers in Translation and Interpreting, specialists in language teaching and other complementary subjects, will guide students throughout the degree, making sure they are qualified enough to be able to work as translators or interpreters.

Description:
The translation techniques are essential tools for translators. Thanks to them, on many occasions, translators manage to work out any kind of hurdle. By translating texts of different genres, registers and styles, students will implement the contrast analysis of nominal and verbal categories, number, plurals, tenses, the passive voice, adverbs, periphrasis, modal verbs, and expressions used to make comments; as well as the analysis of mistakes (foreign words and phrases, false friends, prepositions and structure shortcomings). Analysis and discussion of certain theoretical aspects of translation.

This second-four-month-period subject is a starting point towards translation after having studied during the first four-month period the subject Widening of Language C (where students will deepen their linguistic and communicative skills in French); and Theory and Practice of Translation (where students will come into contact, for the first time, with translation from a theoretical and practical point of view). In Translation Techniques, the practical training in Language C will be emphasized regarding the translating practice.

Description:
Students will learn to correctly tackle Interpreting: command of two languages (English and Spanish), analysis and synthesis, short-term memory and general culture. For the practice of Simultaneous Interpreting (in booths), students will be dealing with difficult texts related to current topics such as society, politics and economy, in order to prepare them for their future profession. Furthermore, they will be taught the techniques needed for Simultaneous Interpreting as well as note taking, which will be applied to different topics in conference simulations. Linguistic and technical problems (from Spanish to English) arising from Consecutive and Simultaneous Interpreting will be stressed.
