Degree in Mechanical Engineering

Presentation

The Mechanical Engineering degree at Alfonso X el Sabio University is structured over four years in which students learn skills which, after graduation, will enable them to work in a wide range of technical departments in companies, such as the technical office, production, quality, maintenance and industrial safety, R&D, etc., covering the productive activities of most businesses.

At UAX

During the first year, students learn basic engineering subjects, and the second and third year, subjects common to industry such as Materials, Circuit theory, Thermodynamics and Heat Transmission, Fluid Mechanics, Material Resistance, Industrial Electronics, Automation, etc. In the final year, students learn specific mechanical technology.

The specific technology subjects are complemented by optional studies such as Machine Maintenance and Diagnostics, where students learn about the types of maintenance which exist, decision-making and failure statistics; or Biomechanics, where mechanics are applied to biological systems.

Facilities

In the Motor laboratory, with a test bench for internal combustion engines, students obtain turbo power and test curves.

In the Installations laboratory, students analyse commonly used central heating installations based on a hot water and central heating system for educational use, and air conditioning installations based on an experimental air conditioning unit.

In the Materials laboratory the students will learn to distinguish the metallic materials (testing traction and compression, tenacity, hardness, flexibility, fatigue and torsion) mechanically and carry out soldering, metal casting the manufacture of compound materials, as well as heat treatments for later metallographic study.

Lecturers

The teaching staff consists of doctors, physicists, chemists, mathematicians, and especially industrial engineers. Mechanical Engineering lecturers work in companies including INTA, IBM, PSA Peugeot-Citroen, Gas Natural, Unión Fenosa, Endesa, E.A.D.S.- C.A.S.A., Metro de Madrid and John Deere.

Unique Features

Mechanical Engineering students have direct contact with the profession through visits to companies and state organisations in the field of mechanics. For example, they can visit the Renault España, S.A. factory in Valladolid where they can follow the entire assembly process of a Renault Clio.

Students have the opportunity to participate in University-Company Technical Symposia. As examples of these, INTA analysed the Present and Future of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in Spain, Red Eléctrica de España made a presentation about the electricity market and the figure of the Carrier, and Toshiba Iberia discussed its commitment to energy efficiency and renewable energies.

Alfonso X el Sabio has signed educational cooperation agreements with public and private companies in the sector such as Carrier Ibérica, Eads- Casa, Renault España and Repsol YPF, where Mechanical Engineering students undertake internships.

Employment Opportunities

Mechanical Engineering graduates have many openings in the job market. Their options include working in public or private companies in the industrial sector, occupying technical or managerial posts in different departments, such as  the technical office, production, quality, maintenance or R&D.

Possible tasks include the design, calculation and construction of equipment or machinery in general, maintenance and safety in machines or installations in industrial premises, production management, industrial organisation, quality and the environment, etc.
