Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction

Presentation

The UAX Civil Engineering, Construction degree teaches the skills for planning, execution, conservation, maintenance and operation of motorways, highways, high speed railway lines, ports and similar infrastructure, as well as the construction of public buildings and earthworks.

At UAX

During the first two years, students will able to solve mathematical, physical and mechanical problems, and show their awareness of graphic representation, the characterisation of terrain and geological structures, etc.  Similarly, they will study subjects relating to geotechnical and topographical aspects, structural analysis, plant machinery, different construction materials, basic health and safety studies, etc. Their specialisation in Civil Construction is acquired in the last two years of the course, in which they will learn project calculation and layout, the construction, renovation and conservation of linear projects and railway lines, the calculation, planning and execution of geothermal projects and large infrastructure, the design, construction and conservation of maritime projects, the application of construction procedures and machinery, etc.

Facilities

The University provides Physics, Chemistry, Materials, Geology, Electrical Engineering, Hydrology, Topography and other laboratories for students. For geotechnical work and prefabricated structures, the University has a materials laboratory where different materials can be characterised, and the geotechnical laboratory for determining the type of terrain and the possible need for foundations or modification for application to different types of structure.

Lecturers

The teaching staff has solid professional careers in the field of Civil Engineering, which will help their students make contact with the fields of the profession. For specialist subjects there are professionals who provide services for Dirección General de Carreteras, Puertos del Estado, Adif, etc.

Unique Features

Especially during the last two years, students are encouraged to complete their training with internships in companies such as Ineco-Tifsa, Renfe, Dragados, Elsan-Pacsa, Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid, the Ministry of Public Works (CEDEX), Ferrovial, Puertos del Estado, Acciona Infraestructuras, Sacyr Vallehermoso, etc., and to participate in student exchanges with universities in Germany, Austria, Lithuania, South Korea, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Italy, Portugal, Canada, France and the USA.

Students visit civil engineering projects in Spain, such as the port of A Coruña, where they can see work being carried out, and the Itoiz Dam in Navarre, where they can observe water management and hydroelectricity production.

Also, companies such as Acciona Infraestructuras, Adif, Ineco, Velasco Obras y Servicios, Ferrovial, and Constructora San José visit UAX to discuss the types of constructions and infrastructure they have built, explaining the constructional methods used in tunnels, bridges, ports, dikes, etc.

Employment Opportunities

Civil Engineering graduates will be able to work as site directors and technical assistants in the construction of roads, motorways, ports, airports or railways, and in companies which carry out preliminary studies, pre-projects and projects for such works, and in the management, control and logistics of ports and airports, management of the public works departments of government bodies, or in the government department of roads. They can also work in civil engineering companies, building companies and in education.
