Degree in Building Engineering

Presentation

Building Engineering degrees are structured into 4 academic years. This degree gives access to the profession of Technical Architect or Aparejador in Spain, and internationally it is instantly recognised as the qualification of a Building Engineer.

At UAX

The syllabus of the UAX Building Construction degree analyses all aspects of the complex construction industry, including diagnostics, planning, calculation and execution. The study plan covers the real demands of our society, with an emphasis on new spheres of the profession, such as sustainability, remodelling and management. The University also organises annual visits to building sites and companies in the sector, such as Torre de Cristal, the Somosaguas Technical Centre, the Construtec Trade Fair and Cerámica la Paloma.

Facilities

The Materials and Installations Laboratories are two experimental spaces where students can simulate water and electrical supply circuits and test the quality and suitability of the materials and equipment most used in building.

The technological workshop has architectural drafting software (Autocad) and project management software such as MS Project and Presto, for learning about creating estimates and project planning.

Lecturers

The teaching staff consists of doctors, building engineers, architects, engineers, economists and construction industry professionals, who work with their students in a personalised and direct way, with a relationship based on trust and learning rather than bureaucracy. The lecturers and the students take part together in Spanish and international building competitions, stimulating the creative spirit of the students.

Unique Features

From the first year, the students revisit the concepts of drawing, mathematics, physics and other basic subjects. In the second year, students make further progress in the content of the first year (Structures, Installations, Construction and Management).

The third and fourth year focus on developing an in-depth understanding of the fundamental materials, incorporating more specialised subjects (Remodelling, Safety and Prevention, Sustainable Building and Town Planning).

There will be practical internships in companies of recognised prestige and public bodies which have agreements with Alfonso X el Sabio University (Sacyr, Renfe, OHL, Iberdrola, Ferrovial Agroman and Constructora San José).

The study plan includes new subjects for Building graduates such as Town Planning and Town Planning Management.  These give students the knowledge they need to work as a municipal developer and technician.

Employment Opportunities

The usual career options for Building Engineering graduates are Site Manager, Designer and Developer.
